Speaking of violence and other things; the case of the Autonomous University of Mexico City

Abstract

Violence in universities is a constant, whose effects are harmful, not only for the victims, but also for the institutions, which, despite implementing programs and protocols for its prevention, continue to be inoperative. We show the result of an investigation whose purpose is to show the panorama of symbolic violence experienced by students of the Autonomous University of Mexico City, we focus on harassment as one of the most recurrent and visible expressions in the daily life of the university students The objective is to know the data that brings us closer to the analysis of narratives obtained from the victims of this silent violence, with the intention of provoking reflection and social self-criticism. For this, methodologically we rely on the reading and analysis of the results of statistical bases provided by various institutions and public organizations, as well as various print and electronic media and, particularly, the voice of the actors involved in the phenomenon of study as a tool to identify the multiple expressions of violence and institutional omissions. We conclude that the implementation of protocols and prevention policies are a fundamental condition, but it is also essential to understand that culture and the sum of collective wills are a necessary condition to be able to contain harassment and violence in universities.
