The Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at the Intercultural University in Puebla, Mexico: its path, challenges and opportunities

The article presents the results of a qualitative research study conducted among the student community of the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at the Intercultural University of the State of Puebla, located in the Totonac indigenous municipality of Huehuetla, in the Sierra Norte region of Puebla, Mexico. This university is part of the network of Intercultural Universities in the country. The applied methodology is based on a review of bibliographic sources, an analysis of the university’s context, and the presentation of the study program that has been implemented. Subsequently, the results of the fieldwork are presented, in which structured interviews were conducted. The aim of this research is to present the students’ conceptions of interculturality within the Nursing program. It also includes a critical reflection on the challenges and achievements since the creation of the program, as well as an analysis of its importance for the intercultural region of the Sierra Norte of Puebla and for the Intercultural Universities in Mexico. In conclusion, the study considers that the program fulfills a highly relevant social and cultural function, helping to address and respond to the health-related challenges currently faced in the municipality of Huehuetla and throughout the intercultural region.
