Tiro en Braille, a university initiative of Sport for Development: contributions to local agendas and to the Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

Sport for Development and Peace has enjoyed a notorious growth at the global level during the 21st century. However, in Mexico, both are little studied. This paper analyzes a Mexican university-based sports activity -Tiro en Braille-, co-produced and co-developed by university professors, students at two Mexican universities, as well as with the participation of disabled players. The inauguration tournament assessment is based on the VECTOR-I model developed by a university professor with feedback from participants. The methodology is mixed; on the one hand, participative action for the coproduction; on the other, analytical for the interpretation of data resulting from pre and post tournament questionnaires among participants and non-participants. The qualitative and quantitative results suggest measurable changes in values, attitudes, and conduct between non-participating university students and those who participated in the tournament. However, the rush in which the tournament was organized and the face-to-face restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic are thought to have diminished the beneficial impact of Tiro en Braille for participants.
